Very comfortable, some minor issues |
I love the look of this keyboard and mouse because its black and matches all my computer parts. The only problem is setting it up is a little troublesome because they have these "connect" buttons on the IR receiver, keyboard, and mouse that you have to press in a certain order to set it up or else one of the devices won't work. (Receiver, Keyboard, Reciever, then Mouse).
After you get it setup, it works flawlessly. One complaint is the layout of the "Home, Insert, Delete, End, PageUp, PageDown" keys is not to my liking. I prefer them to be 3 across and 2 down, but this one is 2 across and 3 down because I like the "End" button to be just above the "Up" arrow key like it is on most keyboards.
Another complaint I have is that you can only tilt the keyboard up from the back so it slants towards you. I like being able to tilt the keyboard up from the front so its slanting away from you (like some Microsoft keyboards) because I use a keyboard drawer which places the keyboard lower around elbow height. But this is just a minor issue.
Also I don't know why they only included a USB connection for the keyboard and NOT the mouse. If you wanted to use this with a late model laptop that only has USB connectors and no PS/2 then you would run into some problems.
Other than that, its a great keyboard and mouse. I actually have 2 of these (one at work and one at home!) |

Not the most natural I've ever used |
I bought this set for my desk at work after I got a new [black] computer and it didn't have a PS/2 port for my old [grey] MS Natural keyboard. I love the original Natural keyboard and have used it at home and work for years. However, the keys on this Logitech aren't quite as angled and overall the layout is such that it is not a smooth transition from the old keyboard or mouse to the new ones.
It seems like Logitech tried too hard to make their split keyboard fit the size of a traditional keyboard. The keys are slightly smaller and closer together, and the right-hand and left-hand keys are not angled apart as much as the original Natural keyboard. Also, in order to move everything closer they shortened the Shift key on the right hand side so that when I reach for it with my pinkie I often hit Enter instead. The "F" or function keys are also too close to the rest of the keys; the space is hardly more than between the other rows of keys, when if you look at most keyboards there is a significant amount of space (about 1/2 the width of a key). Finally, they rearranged the six keys above the arrow keys, so that rather than two horizontal rows of three keys that read Insert-Home-Page Up / Delete-End-Page Down, this keyboard has three rows of two keys: Home-End / Insert-Page Up / Delete-Page Down. If you use these keys very often and are used to reaching for them without looking, this is very irritating. (They also moved the Print Screen and Pause set of keys over above the number pad instead of above the Home/Page UpDown keys, but I don't use those as often so that doesn't affect me as much.)
As for the mouse, it is either very sensitive or doesn't work very precisely so I find I am constantly clicking on the wrong things or having to pay extra attention to my mouse movements to select something. By default it was set to slow down as it approached a "destination", which was very confusing until I checked the settings to see why I was having so much trouble. After turning off that dubious feature, I have adjusted the movement speed a few times and am still struggling with accurate mousing. I would think that this is just because nothing is like the old heavy-ball mice, but I have a wireless mouse at home (Logitech, in fact) that works just fine for me. Maybe there is still hope, but I am considering giving the set to my boss who seemed to be coveting it when he saw me using it.
I do love not having a cord so I can put papers, cups, pens, etc. in all the space between my keyboard and my new flat panel monitor. And not constantly tugging on a mouse cord to reposition the mouse to a comfortable spot is refreshing, to say the least. But those irritations are being replaced by new ones. I may need to do a little more shopping. But black cordless split keyboards are hard to find!
As for the technical aspect, software setup of this set was easy but the pictures for where to put the batteries were way too cryptic. Give me some words, please! Somehow I thought the batteries needed to go into the mouse and the transmitter and almost broke the transmitter trying to get it apart until I thought to match the back of the keyboard to the picture and realized that was where they wanted me to put in the batteries. I guess it is obvious because the transmitter is plugged in via USB, but the pictures were strange and I don't remember any words saying, "Put two AA batteries each [included] into the underside of the mouse and the keyboard." On the plus side, the wireless connection between the mouse/keyboard and the transmitter seems to work well, and my Logitech wireless keyboard (standard layout) and mouse at home seem to go 2-3 years before needing new batteries. |

Works great, but big annoyances |
I've been using this keyboard and mouse for 6 months now. Technically they work quite well (per other reviews).
However, the annoyances leave me unimpressed:
1. The thumb button on the mouse is way too low. It is so uncomfortable to use that I rarely do use it - even though I programmed it for the same double-click I use constantly at work on MS hardware.
2. The right shift key is half the size of my MS Natural keyboards - for no apparent reason. I'm constantly missing it.
3. In general, I feel I'm working much harder on the Logitech keyboard. I type very quickly, and I find my hands get tired and fingertips irritated. I certainly have to hit the backspace a lot more frequently (meaning I'm mistyping) compared to the MS Natural keyboards.
Bottom line for me: I will continue to use this keyboard and mouse, but I would not buy them again. |
