"I do not believe I know your name, tall man..." |
| For most of my life, every March 17 my family would turn on Channel 11 at 8 p.m. after eating corned beef and cabbage to watch "The Quiet Man." Just as Christmas was made for watching "Miracle on 34th Street," and July 4 for "Yankee Doodle Dandy," so did St. Patrick's Day seem tailor made for this 1952 John Ford movie. To this day, I feel a little guilty watching it any other day but then. But I do manage to get over it and watch this great film. To some extent or another, every Irish-American feels a certain degree of homesickness for the old sod at some point or another. "Going back," therefore, can assume the dimensions of a religious pilgrimage. John Ford captures that sentiment here, as Sean Thornton (John Wayne) comes back to the cottage where he was born. Although he soon learns that it's not all he expected, that he has to fight for his right to be there, in the end he comes home and stays there. Wayne and Maureen O'Hara have a great chemistry together on screen, and this is by far the best of their five movies together. Ward Bond has perhaps the best role of his long career as Father Lonergan, while Barry Fitzgerald shines as Michaeleen O'Flynn. At age 67, Victor McLaglen was still a force to be reckoned with, and the fight scenes are nothing short of convincing. A movie full of so many great performances, so many great scenes, and such great lines deserves to be categorized as nothing less than a gem (or perhaps an emerald) of a film. See it any day of the year! |

A great movie deserves a better transfer! |
| Artisan just doesn't care about their Republic library! This is a mediocre transfer at best. It actually looks worse than the 1992 40th Anniversary Laserdisc which itself left a lot to be desired. It appears that the same transfer was used for both but the DVD suffers from digital artifacts. The first DVD version was on the Republic label and then was reissued as a "Collector's Edition" when Artisan aquired the Republic library. That's the version currently available. The only difference is an additional documentary called "The Joy of Ireland" hosted by Maureen O'Hara. It's the same crappy transfer on both so don't bother to upgrade. I have loved this great film since I first saw it in 1952 when it was first released. It's also one of the great Technicolor films and deserves a complete restoration along the lines Warners has done with "Gone With The Wind" and "Singing In the Rain". Don't expect that from the clowns at Artisan though. I highly reccomend this DVD only because the film itself is such a classic. It could and should have been so much better though! |
