Sennheiser HD-497 Over-Ear Headphones (Silver)

Average rating: Stars
Stars Great sound at a great price!
The sound that these headphones produced was a HUGE surprise and I couldn't be any happier with my purchase.
Sennheiser HD-497 Over-Ear Headphones (Silver) - Sennheiser
Stars Very good sound, but not very comfortable
Overall, these are fairly good headphones -- very nice sound, cool styling, etc. However, they aren't that comfortable. When wearing for an extended period of time (30+ mins) your ears have that uncomfortable feeling that's supposed to come from really cheap headphones. This may be because the earpieces don't cover the entire ear or the headphones will not loosen enough or both but this isn't what I really expected from Sennheiser. Nonetheless, the sound is still good (when listening to some of my favorite music I have noticed things I never heard before), they look cool, and the price is right.
Sennheiser - Sennheiser HD-497 Over-Ear Headphones (Silver)
Stars the perfect headphone for home/office
I am not an audio expert, I would guess that I am more of an "average" user when it comes to shopping for headphones, which means I usually go for the cheapest headphones I can find.

After going through 3 pairs of cheap headphones, I decided it's time for me to get a decent pair so I can use it at work (I am a programmer working in a cubicle). I have a few needs:
1. must be reasonably priced
2. must be comfortable
3. must have long cords, because I move around in a small parameter quite a bit
4. must produce good sounds

I came across the Sennheiser HD-497 from a recommendation from some online audio forums, that got me start looking at the Sennheiser line of products, and eventually landed on this specific model. It has everything I want and more:

1. It is very reasonably priced: For under $40 dollars, it definitely has my wife's stamp of approval.
2. It is very comfortable to wear: It has this "open" headphone design for ventilation, which allows air to flow in and out, so I don't end up with sweaty ears after 30 minutes. An added bonus to this is, I can still hear a little bit of what's going on around me, something that is important to me at work. I need to hear that my phone is ringing, or that someone is trying to talk to me. This headphone allows me to enjoy my personal music, while still able to hear what's going on around me (as long as I don't turn the music up too loud).
3. It has a very long cord: I have never seen a headphone with such a long cord! It came with a 9 foot cord, which may not please everyone, but it definitely is great for me! I need to move around at work a little bit, and the length of this cord allows me to just slide my chair over to the printer, get a drink of water, or work on some computer hardware on my second desk, all without losing my music! An added bonus to this is, now I can also take this headphone back home, and hook it up to my PC's sound card (located at the back of the computer), and watch DVD with the volume turned up while my wife is sleeping!
4. Sound: like I said, I am not an audio expert, that's why I've always been buying the cheapest headphones as I could find, because I didn't think I can tell the difference between a good headphone and a bad headphone. Well, this one is noticeably better, that even my wife could tell that everything sounds a LOT better. Frankly, I was not expecting this level of quality from a $40 headphone, it sounds more than twice as good as my last pari of headphone, which cost $25.

I highly recommend this headphone for everyone. If you are like me, buying the cheapest headphones you can find, your money is *much* better spend on this one.
