Note, please, that for Canon digital still cameras, this is not a battery charger. (Canon includes a battery charger with its cameras that use custom batteries.) It is an AC adapter that allows you to use your compatible camera without depleting (or even using) a battery.

I own a Canon PowerShot S30. I have regularly used the S30 with Canon's Remote Capture software to take photos that are saved directly to my computer. (Product photos for an online catalog, using a tripod and special lighting rig.) I have found this adapter to be indispensable, since the S30's custom battery doesn't last for hours on a charge. The ACK-700 adapter includes a battery-compartment insert (the DC Coupler DR-700) for the PowerShot S30-S70 models; a small plug fits into that, and the wire passes through a sliding door in the camera. It keeps the camera powered constantly. Easy enough!

I've also used the ACK-700 to power the S30 while transferring photos from the memory card to my computer, but (as someone else remarked here) an inexpensive USB memory card adapter better serves that purpose.

Note: Another Canon AC adapter, the CA-PS700 (also sold on Amazon), is part of the ACK-700 kit! The CA-PS700 kit contains the AC adapter unit (with the wire that goes to the camera) and a cord to plug into the wall. The ACK-700 has those items and includes the DR-700 insert. If you don't need the insert, you can set it aside. Canon's specifications say the CA-PS700 is compatible with the Elura 40mc, Elura 50, Digital Rebel XT (EOS-300D), S1 IS, and S2 IS, so the ACK-700 is compatible with all those models, too.

I just got a PowerShot S2, which requires the CA-PS700 to use AC power; since my ACK-700 already includes it, I didn't have to buy a new adapter!

Necessary if you connect to a computer via USB

If you plan on connecting the camera to a computer via a USB connection, then this product is probably a must buy, else you'll drain the batteries a lot. However, if you have some type of Compactflash peripheral (I have one on my HP 1315 printer), then you can copy directly from the card to your PC. Hence, no need to power the camera. If this is your situation, I'd just buy an extra battery, and possible the 12v adapter so you can charge the battery in the car. Unfortunately, the latter is not sold at amazon.com, at least not at the time of this writing...
